Farewell to Summer

I love summer! That might be obvious considering how many times over the past few months I have reminded you about my ‘This is Summer!’ practice. I promise this will be the last mention of my favourite season (for awhile at least).

Last year at the end of the summer I followed a practice introduced to me by the wonderful Blaze Lazarony in her blog post ‘Say Goodbye to Summer‘. I’d like to share it with you here.

Blaze writes…

“Now is a great time to write the important events of this summer before they fade into a memory. I promise, you won’t have to spend hours hunched over your journal or keyboard to craft something fun and easily.

Let’s get started: First, take out your calendar and look at the weeks from June through today. Looking at your calendar can help jog the ‘ol noggin into recalling past events: trips, special events, important phone calls or other goodies.

Next, for each week write down one word or phrase to describe that week. Your one word could be a feeling, someone’s name, or even a specific calendar event.

Last, enter your words in your calendar and that’s it; 14 words for all 14 weeks and your summer is now captured in a mini-journal entry. If you’d like to partake in the bonus round, you can spend 10 minutes describing your favorite weeks in more detail.

Many times at the end of the summer we look back and wonder where it all went; writing it down is a sure-fire way to honor all the precious moments.”

Doesn’t this sound fun! It’s such a simple way to recall the wonderful moments while they are still fresh in your mind.

Last summer my partner Scott and I sat on our couch and each did this writing exercise on our own and then we shared our words with one another.

It was a delight to do this together and it gave me a way to capture the essence of my summer and also some insight into his experience of summer. We’re planning to do it again this weekend.

As you know, I’m all into personalizing your practices so feel free to twist it and turn it in whatever direction makes you smile. You could draw your summer or make a prose/poem by distilling it even further down to a few words.

Enjoy!
