Life is Funny

Life as a human is one of contrasts, happy and sad, open and closed, hopeful and burdened. We’ve all felt the satisfaction of thirst quenched, the appreciation of the light after a time of darkness, the welcomed warmth after feeling chilled.

Have you ever considered that the beauty of our human experience is because of the contrasts? We are motivated by contrast, delighted by contrast and relieved by contrast.

And yet, how often we loose our way when we’re experiencing something that we label as negative. We are quick to hang our heads thinking that we will forever forward be sad, worn out or angry.

When I heard the poem “Funny” for the first time last week, it was like taking a deep breath of fresh air. I loved it so much I asked for it to be read a second time.

My hope is that “Funny” will offer you new perspective and help you embrace the light and dark that inhabits your life of contrast.

“Funny” A Poem by Anna Kamienska

What’s it like to be a human
the bird asked

I myself don’t know
it’s being held prisoner by your skin
while reaching infinity
being a captive of your scrap of time
while touching eternity
being hopelessly uncertain
and helplessly hopeful
being a needle of frost
and a handful of heat
breathing in the air
and choking wordlessly
it’s being on fire
with a nest made of ashes
eating bread
while filling up on hunger
it’s dying without love
it’s loving through death

That’s funny said the bird
and flew effortlessly up into the air

Feel free to read this poem a second time.
