Happy May Day!

Happy May Day!

When I was a child May 1st was one of my favourite holidays. We called it “May Day”.

We started preparing a few days ahead of time by fashioning the paper from wallpaper books into cone shapes and then adding paper handles to make little baskets.

I remember sitting around the table with my mom and my brother and sisters choosing my favourite patterned paper and lining a tray with baskets.

After school on May 1st, we’d fill our baskets with popcorn and candy, usually tiny mints that looked like pillows, and then we’d deliver them to each of our friend’s houses by hanging them on their front door handles or setting them on the stoop.

The whole idea was not to be seen.

I remember the excitement of sneaking up to the door, giving a quick knock and then running away as fast as I could.

If my friend saw me, she would run after me and try to catch me.

What fun!

Now I realize that this was my childhood rite of spring. This ritual marked the end of a long winter and a time of a fresh new beginning.

Is it time for you to perform your rite of spring?

The birds are singing.

The flowers are blooming.

The bees are buzzing.

The grass is greening up.

The air is warming.

Let nature’s signs of spring inspire you to create a simple ritual that brings you into the delight of this season.

Smell the flowers and inhale spring into your body.
Lie down on the grass with the sun on your face and let the earth welcome you to warmth.
Touch a delicate spring leaf and invite new beginnings into your life.

Create a simple ritual that allows you to sing, buzz and bloom fully into spring.

I’d love to hear about your experience. Share it on my blog as an inspiration to all of us!
