Follow Your Passion

Last night I stepped out of the hustle and bustle of life and into the nourishment of a 6-course dinner with a silent auction. I am grateful for local food deliciously prepared, for old friends and new gathered together, for soft light and soulful music and spontaneity.

I bid on a month at my favourite yoga studio and some crystal water mist which I just sprayed…ahhhh. I haven’t been doing yoga for many months and this was just the nudge I needed to return to my practice.

The event was organized by my friend Andrew at Balance at Work and all proceeds went to an organization called “Jumping Mouse Nature Education”. It boasts of programming designed to bring out the “wild” in children. I’m all for that, especially when it involves tired muscles and soggy feet.

I love nature. In the warm months when it beckons me I readily answer its call. I can count on nature to inspire me, energize and settle me.

But as soon as the cold weather descends, I turn my back on it and I tend to observe nature from the “comfort” of my home. But there’s discomfort in my comfort as I spend the winter cut off from my main source of nourishment.

When I got home last night I took a look at the “Jumping Mouse” website. What fun! The director writes…

“Winter is welcoming us in with its otter slide trails, snow forts, roving bands of kinglets and chickadees, silent midday woods, crackling clear nights, luminous moonlit nights, storms full of miraculously delicate snowflakes, groaning ice, deer-browsed dogwood, long nights, joyful and exhilarating days of trailing animals, frozen lakes, shed antlers, cold winds, deer pee smelling of wintergreen, wide and ambling porcupine trails, the gatherings around fires, the quiet and the cold”.

I can feel her perspective to winter winning me over.

Today as I look out into the cold world, I feel nature calling me and I’m ready to bundle up and answer it.

When you notice that you are separated from what you love the most, let yourself be beckoned back to where you know you belong.
