Your Own Altar

When I wake up in the morning with heaviness in my heart, whether it’s from a dream or a situation in my life that burdens me, I look for something to comfort me.

I’m not prepared to carry a gloomy feeling into my day so I go to my altar.

I sit down and I light a candle. I take a few deep breaths and almost immediately, I feel a sense of calm. Ahhhh….

And when I’m in the process of making a decision, going back and forth and back and forth to the point of dizziness, I find my way to my altar. I light the candle and I sit there in the quiet breathing deeply until I feel a steadying influence.

Sitting with my altar comforts me and helps me find clarity.

One of the first tools I share with my clients in my Sacred Life program is the process of creating their own personal altar.

It’s important to create a place in your home where you can always find comfort.

My clients cultivate a relationship with their altar, and also with themselves and then in the process they learn to trust their inner guidance.

Create an altar for yourself. Keep it simple.

All you really need is a candle and a comfortable place to sit. Choose a cushion on the floor or a chair in a quiet place in your home.

If your intention is to find peace there, and your practice is to return again and again, you will build a relationship with your altar that you can trust.

Over time you can place things on your altar that are beautiful or personally meaningful; a richly coloured cloth, a favourite stone, fresh flowers, a photo or a feather that you found on a walk.

Eventually, sitting with your own altar will seem like being in the presence of a trusted friend or mentor that you can always count on. Your personal altar is a place where you can arrive feeling confused knowing that you will always find comfort.

I have a little sachet of tiny sea shells and white sage I carry as my portable altar. I have a circle of precious stones given to me by someone I love I look at every morning when I awake from sleep.
Thank you for sharing. I always love this, and your words of affirmations always seem to come at the perfect time in my life.
    Rebecca.

I love hearing about your portable altar. It makes a difference to have something precious like your sea shells and sage to carry with you, doesn’t it? When I travel, I often carry a particular stone. It fits in my hand just so and comforts me when I’m away from home.
