Preparing for Baby

When you are preparing a nursery for your baby there is so much excitement as you paint the walls and choose the furniture. So many emotions come bubbling to the surface.

It’s very sweet to have a simple ceremony to bless the space and prepare yourself for the coming birth.

I helped one young woman who was a single mom having her first child. She invited her mother to participate in the ceremony.

The three of us sat together on the floor of the freshly painted room. We brought with us a bowl of water, a bouquet of daisies and a candle. We also brought our excitement of the coming birth.

We lit the candle and then we dropped the heads of daisy after daisy into a clear bowl of water as we expressed our desires for the room of the yet to be born child.

It was beautiful to witness the bowl filling with floating daisies. We used words like love, comfort, peace, appreciation, and fun. When we were finished we blew out the candle and sat in the quiet together. It was so sweet to spend that time together.

When you are expecting a significant change in your life, there is value in expressing your intentions clearly. Creating a special moment with a ceremony prepares the way beautifully and secures an important memory of that transition.

I can tell you with certainty that all of these qualities are infused in the nursery of that child who is now 6 months old. And I imagine that the new mom draws on her memory of that beautiful summer evening ceremony when she’s up at night in the dark of winter comforting her beautiful baby.

Peace, soft voices, floating daisies and lots of love.
