Greet the Day

Sometimes when I first wake up in the morning I feel almost dreary. Whether it’s a feeling lingering from a dream or the fact that my thoughts turn first to my “To Do” list, I am anything but cheerful.

This week I’ve been arising early each morning and going to a 6:30am yoga class. I’ve been finding myself saying “hello” to the harder poses which ever so gently eases the pain that arises.

It’s a surprisingly simple practice of accepting “what is”.

Tomorrow, when I first awaken, I plan to greet the morning with the simple word “hello”.

Here’s a beautiful poem by Mary Oliver with her version of what might happen next. I imagine she took a breath or two (or maybe even three) between each line.

Why I Wake Early
by Mary Oliver

Hello, sun in my face.
Hello, you who make the morning
and spread it over the fields
and into the faces of the tulips
and the nodding morning glories,
and into the windows of, even, the
miserable and crotchety–
best preacher that ever was,
dear star, that just happens
to be where you are in the universe
to keep us from ever-darkness,
to ease us with warm touching,
to hold us in the great hands of light–
good morning, good morning, good morning.
Watch, now, how I start the day
in happiness, in kindness.

I wish you a beautiful beginning to your day.
