Clearing Your Future

I spent the past week clearing and cleaning my home. I made space in my calendar and whenever I had a spare hour, I rolled up my sleeves and tackled an area.

I urged myself into action. I paced myself. I made a game of it. I took it seriously. I offered myself compassion and I cheered myself on.

I cried, I laughed, I sighed, I wondered and I was grateful.

I continued moving through this house clearing from morning until night for most of the week, until finally, I was ready to declare my cleaning spree finished.

I had attended to every room, mopped all of the floors and washed down most of my shelves. I said hello to things I’d misplaced and I let go of things that no longer served me.

My house clearing wasn’t planned although in retrospect I know I could feel the impulse stirring inside me in response to many things that were happening in my life. The turning of one year into another, the mess that was created from a small renovation project, the grief of saying farewell to my youngest son as he ventured off to art school and the empty house when my partner returned to his far away home.

This will be the first time in 34 years that I’ll be living on my own!

When I finished the clearing, I walked from room to room burning a mixture of cedar, lavender, sweet grass and sage. My companionship with each of them has been cultivated over the years and their aromas have special meaning to me.

Then I opened my doors and a few of my windows to invite in the fresh winter air.

I truly feel that this is a new beginning for me, one that had to be marked with a significant ritual.

As I look around my clean home, I feel uplifted. I intend to bask in this feeling and let it lead me to create something unexpectedly wonderful!
